Native Plant Trust’s Garden in the Woods is home to the most extensive trillium collection in New England. Our collection features 21 of the nearly 50 known trillium species in the world, including three of the four species native to New England. In 2013, the Garden in the Woods trillium collection was recognized as a Nationally Accredited Plant Collection by the American Public Gardens Association’s Plant Collections Network.
Trilliums are spring ephemerals – they bloom primarily between late April and late May. These delicate, shade-loving flowers can take up to seven years to grow from seed to mature flowering plant. They are characterized by three leaf-like bracts and three flower petals. In the wild, trilliums face shrinking habitats and unethical collection for the nursery trade.
As you walk through the Entry Garden and the Curtis Woodland Garden, look for these trilliums nestled on the forest floor!
